About us
Who we are
Women income network is a community-based organisation that aims at empowering unprivileged women through maggot farming.
Women Income Network (WIN)is a community-based organization founded in August 2020 to provide a more profitable and safe alternative revenue stream for financially vulnerable rural women working in stonequarries, a sustainable and affordable protein feed for animal farmers, and an eco-friendly bio-wasterecycling system, all through maggot farming. The initiative is located in Kalagala, Luwero district, about 35kilometers from Uganda’s capital city.
We provide training programs on maggot farming, parent stock of maggots to rural women’s groups (program participants) in stone quarries and establish maggot cultivation shelters to support rural women initiate maggot farming as an income generating activity.
Our approach
Our Mission
Diversify employment for sustainable growth of Luwero district.
We pay much interest in fostering new collaborations that can link us modern biotechnologies adoption, new markets and those that can support infrastructure development in Luwero district through establishment of maggot cultivation shelters.
With the support of our partners, the Resolution Project and the MasterCardFoundation JimLeech fellowship, we have established a maggot training center for participants selected for the program. In the last year, 45 women have received free maggot farming training and havebeen guided on the establishment of maggot cultivation shelters. These are ready to become maggot-waste entrepreneurs.
Value proposition
Our concept is designed to drive economic empowerment for rural women.
as they also confront the world’s biggest challenges of food insecurity and climate change. This is because the maggot farming concept has the ability to bio-convert organic waste (food scraps, marketwaste, brewery waste, etc.)which is a pollutant to 9.2% maggot feed (protein animal feed), 35.2% agricultural input residue in the form of eco-friendly manure, and 55.6%evaporated water hence setting pace for a circular economy.
